2nd Annual WV State Golf Tournament Sponosred By BHGREC

The West Virginia State University (WVSU) golf team gathered at Sleepy Hollow to raise funds for a critical addition to their program—a golf simulator. Head coach Sonny Anderson, alongside team members and supporters, focused on the importance of this new equipment for the future success of the team.

Coach Anderson, led the charge in this fundraising effort. He explained the team’s need for a golf simulator to enhance their training, particularly during the offseason. Without an indoor facility, the team struggles to practice during the winter and in inclement weather. Anderson shared that his players often had no choice but to swing their clubs indoors at home, unable to gauge their progress or correct their form. The simulator would have provided crucial feedback on swing accuracy, distance, and overall performance, offering the team a much-needed resource to improve their skills year-round.

Team members and supporters expressed their enthusiasm for the project. Grant Alderman, a player on the team, highlighted the importance of having a consistent place to practice during the offseason. The simulator would not only keep the team engaged during the winter months but also help them maintain their competitive edge. Alderman looked forward to the day when they could train effectively regardless of the weather, ensuring that their progress didn’t stall when the temperature dropped.

The fundraiser was also an opportunity for the community to come together. DJEJ, brought in to help energize the golfers and attendees, underscored the sense of camaraderie that events like this foster. The day began with high spirits, setting the tone for a successful event. Later, a reception was planned, further emphasizing the communal aspect of the fundraiser.

Amanda Fellure, a staff member at WVSU, remarked on the turnout, expressing gratitude for the sunny weather and the strong support from the community. She emphasized the importance of this project for the WVSU golf team and noted how vital it was for the university to have a facility where the team could practice throughout the year.

Brett Knapp, with Rate, felt the positive energy among those present. The favorable weather added to the day’s success, with cool temperatures in the morning and low humidity creating ideal conditions for golf. As the day warmed up, the enthusiasm didn’t wane, and Knapp believed it was the perfect day for the fundraiser.

New team member Brennen Sang shared his excitement about participating in the golf scramble for the first time. He was eager to see how the team performed and was optimistic about the potential outcomes. Sang reiterated the importance of having a simulator, especially during the cold months, as it would have provided the team with a valuable tool to continue practicing and improving when outdoor conditions were less favorable.

Lori Harless, also with Rate, who had a deep connection to the event, reflected on the importance of community support for local universities like WVSU. She emphasized how critical it was for businesses and individuals to engage in community outreach and support the university’s efforts. Harless noted that this event held special significance for her, as it was the first she organized last year and remained close to her heart.

Valerie George Ellis, realtor, salesperson at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Central, praised WVSU as a valuable institution within the Kanawha Valley. She highlighted how the university contributed to the community by educating students who went on to make significant contributions locally. Ellis underscored the importance of investing in the university’s programs, like the golf team, as a way to strengthen the community as a whole.

Grace Peyton of Better Homes and Gardens also stressed the importance of community outreach and sponsorships. She believed that events like this helped foster connections within the community and ensured that businesses gave back in meaningful ways. For Peyton, supporting the WVSU golf team aligned with her company’s commitment to community growth and development.

The WVSU golf team and its supporters came together to raise funds for a golf simulator that would provide the team with a much-needed tool for improvement. Coach Anderson, team members, and community supporters all recognized the significance of this addition, and they invited others to contribute to this worthy cause.
